Things people ask us
If your question isn’t here, email hello@swapshed.co. It comes straight to me.
Booking and pickup
Do I have to book the whole year?
No. Plenty of people only have summer things, or only have winter things, and that’s fine. The year discount is there for people who have both, since it’s the same two visits either way.
You still pay one season at a time, on each pickup day.
I don’t have a driveway. Is that a problem?
Not at all. Most garages in the city are on an alley, and that’s usually the easiest place for us. Tell us in the booking form whether to pull up in the alley, the driveway or out front.
What happens on pickup day?
Two of us show up at your garage in your window and say hi. We tag and photograph each item before it goes on the truck, which usually takes about ten minutes, then leave a door hanger listing what we took. The photos reach your phone that afternoon.
Is there a contract?
There isn’t one. Your next swap gets penciled in automatically, and you can move it or skip it any time before we text you about it. If you’re a founding household, your rates stay the same for two years.
How does the referral work?
Tell a friend or neighbor about us. When they book, they put your name in the “Did a neighbor send you?” box. After their first swap, you each get $25 off your next season. Refer as many people as you like.
What we take
What counts as a small or large patio set?
A small set is one table and up to four chairs. A large set is one table and up to eight chairs, or a sectional. An umbrella and base can ride along with either set. If you have more than that, add a second set or tell us about it under “Something else.”
What if my stuff isn’t on the list?
Add it under “Something else” in the planner with a rough size, and we’ll email you a price before pickup. If it’s something we can’t take, we’ll say so. That box is also how we decide what to add next.
Will you take my kayak?
Maybe. Add it under “Something else” and we’ll let you know. We’re starting with tires, mowers, snow blowers, grills and patio furniture. Kayaks are on the list, and yes, that includes the seventeen-footer.
Do my tires need to be on rims?
Either way is fine. Stack them by the garage door and we’ll bag and tag the set. If a shop swaps your tires, we can drop the set off there on your swap day and pick up the other one while we’re at it.
What about gas and propane?
Run mowers and snow blowers until the tank is close to empty. A little left in there is fine, but we can’t put a full tank on the truck. Grills go without the propane tank, which stays with you.
Storage and care
Where does my stuff stay?
In a locked, dry space here in the metro that we rent and insure, sorted by tag number. It’s honestly not much to look at, which is why the pictures on this site are of garages.
What if something gets damaged?
Your things are insured from the time they leave your garage until they’re back in it. The photos we take at pickup show what shape everything was in, and if something comes back worse, we make it right.
Is the mower tune-up included?
No, it’s an add-on. Storage covers pickup, storage and return, and that’s all. If you want the mower serviced while it’s with us, it’s $99 for a push or self-propelled mower and $189 for a riding mower, billed with your October visit.
The tune-up is an oil change, a new spark plug, a cleaned or new air filter and a sharpened, balanced blade, and then the shop starts it up to make sure it runs. It happens in March, and the mower comes home on your spring swap. If they find anything else, we call you before any more work gets done.
Ready to clear out the garage?
Add what you’ve got, see the price, and book when you’re ready.
